Information for international students

International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS)

The university's International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) office is an invaluable resource for international students. It assists with the application process, handles visa and reporting requirements, and helps you make the most of your academic experience here.

All new international students and international applicants should consult the ISSS “Frequently Asked Questions” page. It provides answers to many of the questions you are likely to have.

The ISSS site also provides information for international applicants, a “to do list” for new international students, and information for continuing students on topics such as visa constraints on employment and how to maintain one’s visa status.

ISSS requires that all new international students attend a Welcome Check-In to collect required information such as copies of your immigration documents. Students must register to attend the Welcome Check-In session of their choice.

ISSS also organizes International Student Orientation to answer questions that may arise as you make your transition to the University of Maryland. The Welcome Check-In and International Student Orientation are announced as the Fall semester nears.
