Minta Martin Seminar: Josef Kallo - Flying with Fuel Cells

Abstract

Fuel cell technology offers a vast field of new possibilities to reduce fuel consumption and pollutant emissions of air traffic. The German Federal Ministry of Transport, Building and Urban Development (BMVBS) entrusted German Aerospace Center (DLR) within an aeronautical research program with the required development work. The product, DLR-H2 led by Dr Kallo, was the first manned airplane that entirely powered by fuel cells. Its unique powertrain enables it to take off, fly, and land without emitting any CO2. With this aircraft as a research test-bed, DLR is conducting research into advanced fuel cells and their applications in aviation, including scaled up larger 4-seater aircraft designated HY4. Depending on the mission the Antares airplanes can be flexibly equipped with a fuel cell system and the corresponding hydrogen tank or with high energy batteries. Furthermore fuel cells and batteries can be used in hybridized mode. This offers the possibility to benefit from the advantages of both energy systems, thus offering an even wider spectrum of mission types for this experimental plane. The lecture will describe the technology behind DLR-H2. It will be delivered in the form of a short course on aviation fuel cells covering introductory material on fuel cells and hybrid power trains to altitude and temperature effects, effects of steady and transient aircraft motions, system integration and heating challenges, to flight testing and data acquisition.

 

Speaker Bio

After attaining his doctorate from the University of Ulm, Dr Kallo worked as a project engineer for General Motors/ Opel in the field of fuel cell vehicle development. In 2006 he moved to the German Aerospace Center (DLR), where he is currently head of energy systems integration and in charge of hydrogen fuel cells and battery system integration for aircraft applications. At DLR he has led several hybrid, fuel cell and aviation projects like the DLR H2 project, the A320-Green Taxi project, the Hybrid Power Plant project, and the on-going Hydrogen fuel cell driven passenger aircraft HY4 project. Two of these projects have received: the 2009 F-Cell Award in cooperation with Airbus and the 2012 Berlin Clean Tech Media Award. In 2015 Dr Kallo became professor and director of the Institute for Energy Conversion and Storage at the University of Ulm. Dr. Kallo received his B.S. (Dipl.-Ing.) in electrical engineering in 1998 from the University of Stuttgart and PhD in electrical engineering in 2002 at the Global Alternative Propulsion Center (General Motors- Mainz Kastel).
