SAVE THE DATE! TIME AND LOCATION TBA

We hope you will set aside time on your calendar on Monday, Oct. 9, to attend Dr. Philip Holmes' lecture here on campus. Dr. Holmes is the first speaker in the new BBI-Kavil Distinguished Speaker series. The time and location of the lecture will be announced soon. We are very excited to have Dr. Holmes join us, and we hope to see you at the lecture!

Speaker:  Dr.Philip Holmes, Program in Applied and Computational Mathematics, Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, and Princeton Neuroscience Institute, Princeton University.

Talk title: Vocal development in marmoset monkeys: neuromechanics and socialinteractions

Abstract: Vocal development requires adaptive coordination of the lungs and larynx, their controlling muscles, the nervous system, and social interactions. We build a biomechanical model of the marmoset monkey vocal apparatus and, using behavioral data and maximum entropy methods, show that combinations of growth in the vocal tract, muscles and nervous system can account for juvenile vocal development. Our analysis appeals to dynamical systems and bifurcation theory, and is based on a normal form reduction of the biomechanical model. In this talk I hope to display lively interactions among mathematical modeling and analysis, probabilistic methods, and biophysical data.

This is joint work with Yayoi Teramoto, Daniel Takahashi and Asif Ghazanfar.

Host: Dr. Krishnaprasad
