NSF-CRCD in Systems Engineering

In September, 2000, researchers at the Institute for Systems Research (ISR), University of Maryland, College Park, were awarded a three-year grant from the National Science Foundation for Combined Research and Curriculum Development in Systems Engineering.

Synopsis:

The long-term goals of this project are to develop methodologies and web-centric design tools for the synthesis, management and visualization of multi-disciplinary system-level architectures. As a starting point, we are investigating formal mechanisms for describing and analyzing systems architectures defined by collections of modular components (having well-defined interfaces and functionality) and connections (describing permissible interactions among components). This capability will provide designers with critical feedback on the feasibility of a systems architecture. Our target application area is NASA's Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) project.
