Abstract
This talk will describe Professor Paley’s work in collective behavior of natural and engineered systems. Professor Paley’s interest in this topic started in the late 90’s, while working as a Metron analyst on Bayesian estimation for acoustic signal processing, when he was given the opportunity to study the distributed optimization of an underwater vehicle team. His curiosity led him to Bluefin Robotics, where he implemented and tested guidance, navigation, and control algorithms for autonomous underwater vehicles. Professor Paley went on to graduate school, where he studied cooperative control of collective motion for ocean sampling with autonomous vehicles. Many of these topics remain central to his current research at the University of Maryland, where he and his students study the dynamics and control of mobile sensor networks and bioinspired and aerial robotics. Some recent work focuses on data-driven approaches to quantify and predict the collective motion of people, which has applications in micromobility and epidemiology.

Biography
Professor Derek Paley is Director of the Maryland Robotics Center and Willis H. Young Jr. Professor of Aerospace Engineering Education in the Department of Aerospace Engineering and the Institute for Systems Research at the University of Maryland. Professor Paley received the B.S. degree in Applied Physics from Yale University in 1997 and the Ph.D. degree in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering from Princeton University in 2007. He was an analyst at Metron from 1997 to 2000 and a software engineer at Bluefin Robotics from 2000 to 2002. Professor Paley’s research interests are in the area of dynamics and control, including cooperative control of autonomous vehicles, adaptive sampling with mobile networks, spatial modeling of biological groups, and bioinspired robotics.
