Abstract
Controllability and observability are fundamental well-studied concepts in system and control theory, with pervasive applications. These are binary concepts, i.e., a system might or might not be controllable or observable. Almost since the introduction of these concepts by Kalman, however, there has been an active effort aimed at quantifying these system properties. Various measures of the degree of controllability and observability have been developed and used in applications. In this presentation, we will discuss some of the subtleties of quantifying these system properties, with a focus on controllability. In the process, we will discuss weaknesses of currently available measures of the degree of controllability of linear time-invariant systems, and propose new measures that are intrinsic in nature.

Biography
Eyad H. Abed is a Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Maryland, College Park, where he has been on the faculty since 1983. He is also affiliated with the university’s Institute for Systems Research, where he is a past director, and the Applied Mathematics, Statistics and Scientific Computation Program. Dr. Abed’s research interests are in system and control theory and applications, especially problems related to nonlinear and linear system dynamics and control and network dynamics. He has contributed to several application areas, most notably in electric power systems and aerospace-related topics. He is a Fellow of IEEE.
