Speaker: Lorna Quandt (Gallaudet University)  

Title: "Enhanced Perception and Cognition in Deaf Sign Language Users? EEG and Behavioral Evidence" 

Abstract: Dr. Quandt will share recent work on using EEG methodology to examine embodied processing in signed language users. The talk will draw upon results from behavioral and cognitive neuroscience studies from the past few years of her work in the Action & Brain Lab at Gallaudet University, the world's premier university for deaf and hard-of-hearing students. Several convergent EEG studies support the notion that sign language users show enhanced processing of movement- and sign-related stimuli. In this talk, Dr. Quandt will explore the possibility that as one gains experience with a signed language, cognition and perception may change. These possible changes may impact only sign-related perception or may transfer further to the perception of non-sign stimuli as well. Dr. Quandt will present recent evidence related to these questions, and will also explore the potentially overlapping effects of sign language experience and the physical state of being deaf, both of which may independently affect perception and cognition.
