Prof. Girvan will give her talk, Machine Learning for Forecasting Complex Systems, at 4 p.m. in room 1410 of the John S. Toll Physics Building. Please join us at 3:30 for refreshments, and to congratulate Prof. Girvan on her well-deserved designation as a DST!
Our fall colloquia will conclude with a special talk, the Distinguished Scholar-Teacher Lecture of Prof. Michelle Girvan, on Tuesday, December 13.
Prof. Girvan works in the field of network science, which focuses on how complex connectivity patterns among interacting units can give rise to emergent phenomena. She is a Fellow of the American Physical Society and of the Network Science Society. Since 2016, she has served as director of UMD’s COMBINE (Computation and Mathematics for Biological Networks) program, an innovative, cross-disciplinary model for graduate education that prepares students to pursue a range of STEM careers. She has also been deeply involved in TREND (Training and Research Experiences in Nonlinear Dynamics), teaching undergraduates to plan, refine and scrutinize research.
