Title: "Hearing Care Outside of the Audiology Clinic: Improving Detection, Diagnosis, and Management"

SpeakerDanielle Powell (John Hopkins University)

AbstractUp to 6 out of 10 individuals with dementia report hearing loss. Hearing loss has been associated with nearly two times the risk of dementia compared to those without hearing loss. Dementia symptom presentation and care needs are complex and addressing hearing loss or hearing care needs in those with dementia is understudied. Recent work suggests care strategies like systematic incorporation of care partners, consideration of the care needs of coexisting chronic conditions, and hearing management beyond provision of a hearing device may be important steps in evidence-based strategies to support the hearing needs of those with hearing loss and dementia. These findings highlight the importance of translational science in supporting systems-level strategies to improve detection, diagnosis, and management of hearing care for older adults.
