MSE Seminar Series: Flexible thermoelectric and electrolyte films

Friday, April 5, 2019
1:00 p.m.
2110 Chem/Nuc Bldg, UMD College Park

Speaker: Deepa Madan, Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering, UMBC

Title: Flexible thermoelectric and electrolyte films

Abstract:

Thermoelectric Generators (TEGs) utilize the temperature difference available between hot surfaces and ambient atmosphere to generate power output from waste heat. In this talk, Madan will present a method to synthesize thermoelectric (TE) composite slurries to print high-performance TEG devices on flexible substrates. Her lab at UMBC focuses on synthesizing, optimizing, and characterizing the thermoelectric properties of polymer-thermoelectric composite films. I will share results from our current work on thermoelectric properties of composite thermoelectric films. Our lab also focuses on fabricating rechargeable, flexible, safe, and non-toxic batteries. I will share some interesting findings related to the ionic conductivity of flexible and stable wood-based gel electrolyte films.

Bio:

Dr. Deepa Madan is an Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC). She joined the UMBC faculty in 2016. Dr. Madan received her post-doctoral training in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the Johns Hopkins University. She received her PhD in Mechanical Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley, where she developed printable cost-effective thermoelectric generators. Her research interests are in composite and polymer thermoelectric materials and devices, rechargeable batteries, and additive manufacturing techniques. Outside of the laboratory, Dr. Madan is passionate about facilitating scientific opportunities for under-represented, minorities, and undeserved groups.  Dr. Madan is the Co-director of S-STEM program at UMBC and mentor for CWIT scholars.
