A Panel Discussion on Industry, Government and Universities

Attendees will learn about energy projects, and how different energy sectors promote and develop these projects, and explore opportunities to contribute. This is a great event for students who want to learn more about involvement or employment in the energy industry.

Christopher Russell
Energy Program Manager
Maryland Energy Administration (MEA)

Christopher Russell is the Energy Program Manager, State Buildings, Building
Codes at the Maryland energy Administration. Christopher is the author of
"Managing Energy from the Top Down" and "North American Energy Audit
Program Best Practices." He holds an M.B.A. and a Master of Arts degree from the
University of Maryland and a B.A. from McGill University. He is recognized by the
Association of Energy Engineers as a Certified Energy Manager. He is an Advisory
Board member for the Texas A&M Industrial Energy Technology Conference and
for Brotman Financial Services.

Giuliana (Giuls) Kunkel, LEED AP O+M
Account Manager – Colleges and Universities, Federal Buildings, and DOD
D.C. Sustainability Energy Utility (DCSEU)

Giuliana (Giuls) is the DCSEU’s Account Manager for Colleges Universities and for
the Federal Government, including the Department of Defense. Giuls works
closely with universities towards reaching campus sustainability goals, planning
capital projects, and improving existing facilities. She also assists project teams in
the Federal Government to determine energy efficiency solutions for their
buildings and provides third party assistance when working with Energy Savings
Performance Contracts (ESPCs). Giuls’ background includes working as a
Sustainability Analyst for The Tower Companies and working in customer
engagement and marketing at a local renewable energy supplier. Giuls serves on
the US Green Building Council NCR’s Market Leadership Advisory Board and is an
accredited Certified Energy Manager (CEM) and LEED AP O+M.

Mark Stewart
Sustainability Manager
UMD Office of Sustainability

Mark helped launch the Office of Sustainability in 2007 and developed various
sustainability programs in his time at the University of Maryland. He currently
leads efforts to reduce the university’s carbon footprint, administers the
University Sustainability Fund, and runs educational programs that aim to prepare
every student with the skills they need to be change-agents for sustainability.
Mark was recognized for his work by the Barack Obama Administration as
nominee for the White House Champions of Change award. Mark earned a
Sustainability Certificate from Harvard University, Master’s degree in Higher
Education Policy & Leadership from UMD, and Bachelor’s degrees in
Environmental Science and Organizational Psychology from UMBC. Prior to
working at UMD, he taught high school earth and environmental sciences, worked
as a GIS specialist and led organizational development.
