Metamaterial Enhancement to Robotic Navigation – Bio-inspired Metamaterial SONAR

Abstract

SONAR has proven to be one of the main methods of realizing navigation and tracking tasks in robotic due to the plurality of advantages it has over other systems such as vision or GPS-based methods. For example, they demand comparatively small computing resources, signal processing, and power, as well as are able to work under severe conditions. It has remained a challenge, however, to develop highly performant SONAR-based systems with robot-optimized features like miniature size, lightweight, and even lower power consumption with uncompromised or even improved performance. Biological systems, however, hold the key to
unearthing such properties, since they contain highly developed and optimized acoustic organs and structures. In this talk, we explore the use of bio-inspired acoustic metamaterials to circumvent these issues and achieve a highly effective SONAR system suitable for robotic
applications. Key advantages provided by the acoustic metamaterial for SONAR-based
navigation will be discussed and demonstrated.
