Title: Energy Harvesting Using Magneto-Elastic Materials

Speaker: Prof. Amr Adly
Professor, Cairo University
Deputy Minister of Higher Education & Scientific Research for University Affairs, Egypt

Abstract: In recent years, the issue of energy conservation has gained global attention and enthusiasm. As a result, various research activities have been directed to serve that issue on different scientific, industrial and economic fronts. Within those activities, several energy harvesting concepts from mechanical vibrations have been proposed. Basically, their working principles capitalized on the conversion of environmentally existing mechanical vibration energy into electrical energy. This conversion is made possible by exploiting the relatively large coupling coefficients between mechanical variables and electric or magnetic fields which are exhibited by several materials such as piezoelectric and magneto-elastic materials. This talk is mainly focused on electrical energy harvesting from mechanical vibrations using magnetostrictive and smart magnetic materials. Relevant applications include self-powered wearables, sensors and active vibration dampers. Details related to typically utilized materials, their modeling, power density and harvesting concept will be discussed.

Speaker Biography: Prof. Amr A. Adly, received the B.S. and M.S. degrees from Cairo University and the Ph.D. degree in Elect. Eng. from the University of Maryland, College Park, USA in 1992.
