Description
Microfluidics techniques can allow versatile processing of exceedingly small quantities of fluid, and the particles and molecules inside that fluid can be manipulated in a cost-effective manner such that many experiments can be performed at once on a single chip. The potential benefits of advances in this field include streamlined pharmaceutical research and development, improved clinical diagnostics, enhanced drug delivery systems and better bioweapons sensors.

Researchers in the Department of Aerospace Engineering, University of Maryland, envision being able to move, sort, and control the path of multiple cells at the same time on a micro-fluidic platform. This would enable the capabilities of a laser tweezer, a Coulter cell sorter, and electrophoretic sorting on a single platform. In addition, this technology will also allow the creation of directed cell to cell collisions simultaneously and for many cells to be able to sort uncharged particles or particles of equal charge. Moreover, this method is non-invasive.
