Alumnus Trappe Wins Best Paper Award at ACM Conference on Mobile Systems

Prof. Wade Trappe (Ph.D., E.E., '02)

ECE alumnus Wade Trappe (Ph.D., E.E., '02), Associate Director of the Wireless Information Network Laboratory (WINLAB) at Rutgers University, recently received a best paper award at the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) 8th Annual International Conference on Mobile Systems, Applications and Services MobiSys 2010). His research group's award-winning paper, "ParkNet: Drive-By Sensing of Road-Side Parking Statistics," represents a new direction for signal processing, suggesting a new way that technology can relieve traffic congestion and help drivers find available parking spaces by making detailed parking data widely available via Web-based maps and navigation systems. Their work was also featured in MIT Technology Review.

Trappe received his M.S. in 1999 and his Ph.D. in 2002 from the University of Maryland, where he was a student with ECE Department, the Institute for Systems Research (ISR), and the Applied Mathematics and Scientific Computation Program. He was advised by Professor K. J. Ray Liu.

Prof. Trappe has also had two former advisees recently win National Science Foundation Faculty Early Career Development (NSF CAREER) Awards: Wenyuan Xu, currently Assistant Professor at the University of South Carolina's Department of Computer Science and Engineering, won for her research, ""THAWS-Towards Highly Available Wireless Services," while Yingying Chen, currently an Assistant Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the Stevens Institute of Technology, won for her research, "Enhancing the Security of Pervasive Wireless Networks by Exploiting Location.”
