Clark School to Host Workshop on Security of Edge Devices in the Post Quantum Era

On Tuesday, July 14, 2026, the A. James Clark School of Engineering will host a workshop on the Security of Edge Devices in the Post Quantum Era. The event is co-sponsored by the University of Maryland, Northrop Grumman, Army Research Lab and Air Force Research Lab. Leaders in government, academia and industry will gather to discuss the challenges and opportunities posed by the post quantum era.

As the quantum computing era is becoming more and more of a reality, the edge devices will increasingly work in tandem in a control, computing and communication regime, where quantum computers play a significant role. As we envision the design of such systems, we cannot ignore the threat posed by adversaries which are quantum capable. For example, NIST is already transitioning away from traditional quantum vulnerable cryptography standards to quantum secure PQC standards

This workshop will illuminate the challenges and opportunities posed by the post quantum era. Topics of interest include:

  • PQC applied on edge devices and the associated impact on SWAP
  • Physical security challenges such as side channels and tamper-proofing in the quantum era where the attacker has access to a quantum computer capable of solving complex mathematical problems, leading to a larger attach surface.
  • Security opportunities posed by quantum computing: access to quantum computing and the associated increase in computational power can allow more effective identification of security threats in the device and systems.

The workshop is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in the A. James Clark Forum (Room 1101), A. James Clark Hall at the University of Maryland.
