Scalable security and privacy for an Internet on wheels
Panagiotis (Panos) Papadimitratos
Chief Cybersecurity Scientist
Vehicular Communication (VC) systems will make transportation safer and more efficient, play a pivotal role in electrified roads and smart cities, and provide a gamut of services to drivers and passengers. Security and privacy protection are indispensable for deploying VC systems; this is clearly understood in the community, with relevant targeted standardization and harmonization activities. The commonly accepted approach is to deploy a Vehicular Public Key Infrastructure (VPKI) that enables pseudonymous authentication. Nonetheless, the scale and the complexity of VC systems, and systems they interconnect with, raise significant challenges. In this talk, we focus on the security infrastructure, the VPKI, and how to design and build a system that improves on security, privacy, and efficiency. We will discuss how to achieve improved protection while supporting large VC system areas with modest computing resources.
Panagiotis (Panos) Papadimitratos earned his Ph.D. degree from Cornell University, Ithaca, NY, in 2005. He then held positions at Virginia Tech, EPFL and Politecnico of Torino. Panos is currently a Professor at KTH, Stockholm, Sweden and chief cybersecurity scientist at RISE SICS (Swedish Institute of Computer Science). Panos leads the Networked Systems Security lab at KTH. He is a Knut and Alice Wallenberg Academy Fellow. He has delivered numerous invited talks, keynotes, and panel addresses, as well as tutorials in flagship conferences. Panos serves as an Associate Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Mobile Computing and the ACM/IEEE Transactions on Networking; he is a member of the Privacy Enhancing Technologies (PETS) Editorial and Advisory Boards. He was program chair for the ACM WiSec (2016), TRUST (2016), and CANS (2018) conferences, and general chair for ACM WISec (2018). He currently serves as general chair for PETS (2019) and IEEE EuroS&P (2019). Panos is a member of the Young Academy of Europe.
