Abstract
Vehicular Communication (VC) systems will make transportation safer and more efficient, play a pivotal role in electrified roads and smart cities, and provide a gamut of services to drivers and passengers. Security and privacy protection are indispensable for deploying VC systems; this is clearly understood in the community, with relevant targeted standardization and harmonization activities. The commonly accepted approach is to deploy a Vehicular Public Key Infrastructure (VPKI) that enables pseudonymous authentication. Nonetheless, the scale and the complexity of VC systems, and systems they interconnect with, raise significant challenges. In this talk, we focus on the security infrastructure, the VPKI, and how to design and build a system that improves on security, privacy, and efficiency. We will discuss how to achieve improved protection while supporting large VC system areas with modest computing resources.
