Model-Based Systems Engineering with SysML: Problem Definition, Analysis and Optimization

The Systems Modeling Language (OMG SysML) has been introduced by the Object Management Group as a general purpose modeling language to support Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE). It extends the OMG Unified Modeling Language (UML) by including additional modeling constructs suited for modeling the physical aspects of systems in addition to the software aspects. This makes SysML an appealing option to support the development of the growing range of products that rely on an tight integration between software and hardware, often referred to as mechatronic systems, embedded control systems, or cyber-physical systems. In current MBSE practice, the emphasis is strongly on representing requirements and specifications in SysML. In our research, we broaden this by formally representing the entire design problem, including requirements and objectives, system alternatives, and analyses at different levels of abstraction and from different perspectives. We focus in particular on domains in which the domain knowledge can be captured in libraries of modular, reusable and composable models. Through the use of model transformations, we convert problem definitions into analysis and optimization models that are then solved efficiently by sophisticated mathematical solvers. We combine models defined in SysML with GAMS and Modelica models. The overall approach will be illustrated for the domain of hydraulic systems.
Dr. Paredis is an Associate Professor in the G.W. Woodruff School of Mechanical Engineering and Associate Director of the Model-Based System Engineering Center at Georgia Tech. He holds graduate degrees in Mechanical Engineering from the Catholic University of Leuven (Belgium) and in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University. Dr. Paredis has a broad, multidisciplinary background. In his research, he focuses on Model-Based Systems Engineering, combining aspects of decision theory, information technology, simulation, and systems theory to support the design of complex mechatronic systems. In these areas, he has published more than 100 refereed journal articles and conference papers. He is active within the Object Management Group (OMG), serving as chair of the Finalization Task Force for the SysML-Modelica Transformation Specification, and serving on the SysML Revision Task Force. He also serves as associate editor of the Journal of Mechanical Design, and he was the Chair of the ASME Computers and Information in Engineering Division in 2007-2008. Dr. Paredis received the 2007 CETL/BP Junior Faculty Teaching Excellence Award, the 2007 SAE Ralph R. Teetor Educational Award, and the 2011 ASME CIE Excellence in Research Award.
