Abstract
Biochip science and technology involves many disciplines; one of them is electrochemistry. From the electrochemistry point of view we can identify two fields of interest generally related to biochips: a. electrochemical technologies for biochip manufacturing and b. electrochemical sensing, which is attractive due to its simplicity and high sensitivity. Biochip technology is emerging from the existing micro fabrication methods; it can be produced on silicon, glass or polymeric platforms. We believe that polymeric based biochip technology is advantageous and present a short review of plastic MEMS processing, for both thick and thin plastic substrate, using electroless and electroplating metallization methods or electro-polymerization for conducting polymers. Special attention will be given to novel surface functionalization using combination of UV illumination; plasma processing and self assembled mono or multilayer modifying the plastic/metal interfaces. In the second part of the talk we present whole cell electrochemical biochips and protein sensors using electrochemical biochip compatible methods. We will discuss their highlight and problems. Few applications will be presented and discussed: a. Water toxicity sensing, b. Cancer research, screening and monitoring, and c. Implanted electrodes for brain research and peripheral nerve signal pickup.
