Current status of adaptive optics imaging through deep atmospheric turbulence

Abstract
Regardless of the application of interest, remote imaging over long distances is invariably impacted by atmospheric turbulence. The field of astrophysics has sufficiently matured so that real-time image compensation is commonly achieved using adaptive optics systems leading to remarkable image quality improvements. In the field of defense and surveillance however, imagery is often required over near-horizontal line-of-sights---conditions known as "deep" turbulence. In this situation, turbulence is much more severe than when "looking up" and compensation systems developed previously are not adapted to the new challenges specific to deep turbulence scenarios. I will present recent imaging alternatives specifically suited for this new paradigm.
