Research Topics: Ion Transport and Structural Evolution in Solid State Ionics and Their Interfaces Charge Transfer Reactions at Heterogenous Catalyst Interfaces by In situ microscopy

Title: Probing Interfaces Involving Solid Electrolytes: current and emerging electron microscopy techniques

Solid electrolytes show significant importance toward the realization of the future generation of electrical energy storage, both as the primary component in all-solid-state batteries and potentially as protection layers to enable the use of metallic lithium.  Currently, the primary challenge associated with solid electrolytes lies at their interfaces, including interfaces within the electrolyte and those formed with the electrodes. Multiple, coupled interfacial phenomena, such as mechanical integrity, impurity, elemental inter-diffusion, chemical and electrochemical stability, and space charge are often involved, rendering interfacial studies extremely challenging.  In this presentation, the power of scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) will be demonstrated as a means by which to characterize the complex interfaces in solid electrolyte materials. Some of our recent studies, including understanding the interfacial stability of lithium metal with LLZO and LIPON, will be discussed.  Several emerging microscopy techniques will be introduced, such as STEM-based differential phase contrast imaging and electron vibration spectroscopy, that are expected to enable new levels of understanding toward guiding ion transport in energy and information systems.

Bio

Miaofang Chi is a research staff member at the Center for Nanophase Materials Sciences (CNMS) at ORNL. She received her Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering from the University of California, Davis in 2008. Prior to joining the Microscopy Group at ORNL in 2008, she was a visiting scholar at the National Center for Electron Microscopy at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (2004-2006) and was a research fellow at Lawrence Livermore National laboratory (2006-2008). She was awarded the ORNL Director’s Award for Outstanding Individual Accomplish-ment in Science and Technology and ORNL’s Early Career Research Award in 2015; and the Burton Metal by the Microscopy Society of America in 2016. She received the Lawrence Graduate Research Fellowship in 2006 and the Distinguished Scholar Award by the Microanalysis Society in 2007, and significant event awards at ORNL in 2014 and 2016. She has extensive research experience in the development and application of novel electron microscopy techniques for energy materials, such as lithium ion battery materials and fuel cell catalysts. Her current research focuses on understanding mass and electron transport behavior at the atomic-scale, as well as coupling materials physics with local lattice strain, bonding, and chemistry.
