Cohen speaker at Mathematics Colloquium
Professor Avis Cohen (Biology/ISR) spoke at a Mathematics Department Mathematics Colloquium on April 8. Her topic was "Mathematics in Biology: Blowing Smoke or Clearing the Air?" Dr. Cohen presented perspectives on what makes good and bad mathematical models. She included examples from several areas of biology, especially the neurosciences, including the insight that neurons maintain a preferred behavior; an example from cardiac physiology will illustrate how mathematical modeling can bridge level of analysis, and an example from genomics will illustrate a potential new frontier--combinatorics. She also presented material from her own work.Published March 1, 2005
