Descriptions

This is an 18-month, $100K award from the Department of Energy through the National Nuclear Security Administration and Sandia National Laboratories. Professor Gary Rubloff (MSE/ISR) is the principal investigator. He will collaborate with a Grand Challenge Lab Directed Research and Development (LDRD) project team focused on exploring lithium batteries.

Rubloff will investigate the effects of ALD anode protection layers including LiPON, on Coulombic efficiency, lithium morphology, voltage polarization and self-discharge rates for batteries utilizing conventional organic liquid electrolytes and conversion cathodes including Li/CFx, Li/FeF3, and Li/FeS2. He also will investigate the effects of ALD anode protection layers including LiPON, on Coulombic efficiency, lithium morphology, voltage polarization and self-discharge rates for batteries utilizing ionogel electrolytes and conversion cathodes including Li/CFx, Li/FeF3, and Li/FeS2. The cathodes will include planar and three dimensional architecture.
