Alum Dipankar Maity joins ECE faculty at University of North Carolina Charlotte

Congratulations to alumnus Dipankar Maity (ECE Ph.D. 2018), who will be joining the electrical and computer engineering faculty of the University of North Carolina Charlotte as a tenure-track assistant professor this fall.

At Maryland, Maity was advised by Distinguished University Professor John Baras. His thesis, “Controller Synthesis under Information and Finite-time Logical Constraints,” focused on control of cyber-physical systems under logical and communication constraints.

Currently, Maity is concluding his time as a postdoctoral fellow working with Pangiotis Tsiotras in the Dynamics and Control Systems Laboratory at the Georgia Institute of Technology. Maity's research is broadly focused in controls, multi-agent-systems, robotics and cyber-physical systems.

He recently was a co-author with John Baras, Mohammad Mamduhi and Karl Johansson on the paper, A Cross-layer Optimal Co-design of Control and Networking in Time-sensitive Cyber-Physical Systems. This paper addresses the design of cyber-physical systems (CPS) where multiple heterogeneous physical systems are coupled via a communication network, a key aspect is to study how network services are distributed among the users. The authors derive the joint optimal time-sensitive control and service allocation policies for each physical system.

As a student, Maity was honored with the Clark School of Engineering Distinguished Graduate Fellowship, the UMD Graduate School’s Outstanding Graduate Assistant Award, and the ECE Outstanding Teaching Assistant award.

“Dipankar was an outstanding student at UMD,” Baras writes. “He has also received prestigious graduate student visiting positions at KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden, and Technische Universität München; with research groups with which I collaborate; as well as an internship with General Electric Munich.”
