Since the original demonstration of photo-assisted water electrolysis by Fujishima and Honda in 1972, tremendous effort has gone into developing photoelectrochemical (PEC) materials and systems.
The gold standard against which chemical sensors are compared is the dog's nose. However, dogs are expensive to train and can only be used a few hours per day.
